Multi-award-winning video game composer Chase Bethea has unveiled the soundtrack for Duppy Detective Tashia, a Caribbean folklore-inspired noir mystery from developer SpriteWrench alongside what Bethea describes as a new sonic approach he calls “Caribbean Noir.”
The project began when SpriteWrench founder Glen Henry approached Bethea with a creative directive for the game’s reveal trailer: cinematic noir, atmospheric tension, unmistakable Caribbean identity, and something genuinely unsettling. But during production, Bethea realized traditional orchestration and digital production techniques alone could not recreate the visceral rhythmic weight that defines much of Caribbean music.
In response, Bethea purchased a bass guitar despite having no prior experience playing the instrument and taught himself from scratch to perform the soundtrack’s bass lines himself. That decision became the foundation for the score’s musical identity blending noir-inspired tension, cinematic storytelling, and Caribbean rhythmic sensibilities into what Bethea now calls “Caribbean Noir.”
Developed over the course of three years, the seven-track soundtrack was designed not simply as accompaniment, but as a central narrative device shaping the emotional cadence and atmosphere of Duppy Detective Tashia. Inspired by Caribbean folklore and supernatural mystery traditions, the score aims to establish a distinct tonal identity rarely explored within contemporary game music.
Rather than chasing existing genre trends, Duppy Detective Tashia positions its soundtrack as part of the game’s world-building itself using music to reinforce suspense, cultural texture, and psychological tension from the very first trailer reveal.
In celebration of the game release onJune 8th, there will be a soundtrack listening / release party exclusively on Bandcamp - Tuesday, June 2nd at 4:00PM PST.
