After ten years of development Skyturns multiplayer update is released

Sweden, August 25th, 2022 – The indie mobile game Skyturns releases it’s biggest update so far! The existing mobile game Skyturns has just released a big update with multiplayer for Android. You can now interact and compete with other players real time in the game. Skyturns is a skill based running game with a touch of parkour first released in 2014 and has now over 1 million downloads globally. After ten years of developing the game could finally be called done.

Multiplayer update
Since the first release of Skyturns in 2014 the game has been polished and updated many times. The core gameplay and physics of the game are the same - “they have been perfect from the beginning” says Joakim, founder of Skyturns. But not until now the game has all the features it was always meant to have.

The biggest change in this update is of course the real time multiplayer experience – seeing and interacting with other players in the levels (have you noticed that you can zap other players?) But also the possibility for players to start a battle on any level in the game and get on the high score boards.

The level editor has been available for players since 2020 but it is not until now that the players can publish their levels straight into the game for anyone to play.

Open world meets runner games
Skyturns multiplayer is a runner game, with a touch of parkour, in an open world setting in the sky. The goal is simple – find the flag as fast as possible! But there is a lot more to find and do in the world. You can run anywhere you want… if you manage to get enough speed to make the long jumps.

There are lots of fun and cool items scattered across the world, like cloaks with magical traces or shoes that creates dust when you slide down the slopes, you just need to find them. And with this new update you can explore this world together with friends!

Ten years of developing
The founder of the game Joakim got the idea for the game in 2012 and wanted to create a mobile game that he would love to play himself. “I wanted to create a quality mobile game that was skill based and had great physics, something that I wanted to play myself and had not found on the app stores. The idea just came to my head with the ways in the sky and the feeling of the physics.”

Skyturns 1.0 was released in 2014. The game had 50 levels. The stickman was simply black and the graphics where different and more basic. The physics where the same as today.

Skyturns 2.0 was released in 2020. The levels where somewhat the same but with the addition of “mushi” (mushrooms) the game currency, that was hidden all over the levels. Now the stickman got a “body” and you could find clothes and items in the world. The graphics were updated. The level editor was published. The players could share replays from their runs and share levels with their friends through URL links.

Skyturns 3.0 was released in August 2022. The game has real time multiplayer with player interaction. Players can now publish their levels straight into the game. Players can start open battles and join them to get their times on the leaderboards.

After 10 years (on and off) of developing, the game could now be called “finished”.

The future of Skyturns
“I have done my part now - the rest is up to the players. How far can we take this? How crazy and beautiful levels can be created in this game? How much can we push the best times on the levels? That’s what I look forward to seeing!” Says Joakim, the founder of Skyturns.

The biggest part of building the game is now finished, but there will be updates in the future as well. It all depends on how the game progresses with the player content.
