FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VANCOUVER, B.C. — July 2026. Think about how vampire hunters actually work. They are forever holding up a cross and hoping their faith is strong enough to hold back the dark. Vampire Hunter: Nightrise, from Over the Moon, took that genre logic at its word and made faith a literal resource the player has to manage.
“We started with a simple mechanical question: if a cross works because the hunter believes, what happens when that belief starts to run out?” said John Warner, director of Over the Moon. “Suddenly the castle had a way to attack more than your health. It could test you, tempt you, and offer power in exchange for conviction. The more honestly we followed that idea, the more seriously we had to take the theology behind it, just to stay coherent. The story grew out of that.”
What began as a mechanic became the spine of the game. The castle will erode the player’s faith, and then offer power, but every bargain costs something, and every compromise quietly reshapes how the story ends. None of it arrives as a sermon. Faith here is simply something you hold, spend, and can lose, but the Christian ideas behind faith are there, regardless.
“We did not set out to make a religious statement, and the game never preaches,” Warner added. “But vampire stories are built from Christian material: crosses, consecration, temptation, damnation. Resentment and anger towards God. That is the water this genre swims in, and we chose to take it seriously instead of winking at it. Every time we did, the story got deeper, and I came away with real respect for the source material. I began to realize that the reason our story is so coherent isn’t because I wrote it well, it’s because we’re participating in something two melena in the making”
Vampire Hunter: Nightrise launches July 14, 2026 on Steam for $14.99. A demo is available now, and review keys are available on request.
