The Bible game winning secular awards

LONDON, UK

The Serpent & The Seed is a "visually stunning" narrative adventure game for mobile that is overturning the stereotypes of games based on the Bible, by starting to get recognition in secular games awards. Launched as a free app by the charity Discipleship Tech, The Serpent & The Seed is a poetic, emotionally engaging walk through the big story of the Bible from the Garden of Eden to the end of the world. First it was named a finalist for "Audio Design" in the TIGA Games Industry Awards (winners announced in November) and now it has won Gold in the NYX Game Awards for Best Music, Best Narrative & Storytelling, and Silver for Best Visual Art.

The launch trailer can be viewed here. “In a world ruled by a serpent, his thorns & thistles choke the earth. But whispers speak of a long forgotten book that tells of a way to end his reign.”

Inspired by classic mobile games like Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, the game even features a track by #sworcery composer himself, Jim Guthrie - to complement the beautiful custom soundtrack by indie folk duo Poor Bishop Hooper. It also features a script by BAFTA award-winning Amy Green, writer of That Dragon Cancer. Of the project, Amy says “When I played an early demo of The Serpent & The Seed I loved how charming and playful it was. I’m honoured to have contributed to this beautiful story of faith.”

But the game is not winning these awards at the expense of being embraced by the Church: the Anglican Bishop of Lancaster, Jill Duff, says “It’s absolutely beautiful and compelling, and its gorgeous graphics help you experience this world germinating with joy. My hope is that this game will take flight, breathe the oxygen of faith into young hearts who might otherwise never discover the living words of the Bible."

Whilst faith games might sometimes be perceived as a simplistic distraction for children, one player described The Serpent & The Seed as “wasted on the kids” - it is clear that this game will be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. A reviewer on Google Play calls the experience “Beautiful and deeply meaningful”, reflecting The Serpent & The Seed's pitch as an emotionally engaging experience, with relaxing gameplay, gentle puzzle mechanics and mini-games, and delightful artwork. It is available now for free on both the App Store and Google Play.
