WRITER’S NOTE: The rest of this press release is written in 1st person, so feel free to pull any direct quotes by Matt Foreman.

VELOCIBLASTER is a competitive multiplayer VR shooter where you blast away your enemies as a sentient velociraptor wielding high-tech blaster cannons. Who doesn’t want to be a flying high-tech raptor?! In this alternate reality, millions of years ago the catastrophic asteroid missed Earth, allowing velociraptors to evolve and develop advanced technology. Now, they’ve taken to the skies to battle it out in high-stakes aerial combat! The game currently features a Deathmatch game loop with up to 16 players per server.

Early in development, the game started out as a VR movement prototype. I had an idea for a unique physics-based VR flight locomotion where rocket thrusters are built into your weapons (huge blaster cannons). I experimented with this a lot and discovered that it felt most comfortable to point the rocket thrusters downward instead of out the front or back of the weapon, so that when your hands are in a natural resting position you rise straight up. Then to fly directionally, you simply tilt your hands to point your rocket thrust (which is actually somewhat similar to using a helicopter joystick). The flight locomotion is super intuitive and “flowy.” It’s a brand new form of VR locomotion, and most people get the hang of it in less than 5 minutes.

After the locomotion was figured out, the next step was making it possible for players to annihilate each other, obviously. I decided to create projectile-based weapons so that bullets have travel time. This introduces a really fun element - players must learn to lead their opponents when firing and get a feel for each weapon (since some weapons shoot faster than others). It’s also possible to dodge other players’ bullets if you see them firing from a distance. Your blaster cannons are able to switch weapon modes to fire a variety of exotic, projectile-based weapons (inspired by Metroid Prime). The resulting gameplay actually feels very similar to old school arena shooters like Unreal Tournament and Quake - but in VR.

I’m happy to announce that the VELOCIBLASTER open alpha is now available to the public. Simply join the game’s Discord server (https://www.velociblaster.com/discord) and click the link in the “#alpha-access” channel to download the game and start blastin’!

Moving forward, the plan is to build the game alongside its community. We invite everyone to play the alpha and share feedback in the game’s Discord server. An early access launch is targeted for Q4 2025 (specific date TBD). The alpha is available now.
