Medieval sim Norland continues to evolve in massive summer update

The medieval kingdom builder gets new art, new economy mechanics, and… politicians?

July 14, 2025 - Rejoice, peasants! Hooded Horse and Long Jaunt are pleased to announce that the next big step for medieval Kingdom sim Norland is here. The “Big Summer Update” brings with it a whole host of changes, from new artwork to overhauled economic and political mechanics. The game is also still on sale for another couple of weeks!

The headline of the update is expanded art style – there are now multiple models for houses, more visual layers, and especially a better visual evolution for the city over time, from a collection of thatched hovels, to full-on Hanseatic League aesthetics. Beyond that, major changes to how the game’s economy runs, and how characters behave in this medieval fantasy world will keep wannabe rulers on their toes, while streamlining the development and management of the kingdom.

Lords are finally allowed their own pocket money, and so are tied directly into the economy. They will use their gold to independently buy rings – major status symbols within the game – and give them as gifts, removing the need for players to micro-manage the process. The Lords also use their gold for other tasks, such as purchasing food and resources.

The long-awaited politics mechanics are also making their debut. Lords whose loyalty drops too far will become politicians, who will then spend their money to gain influence within the Kingdom to try and seize the throne, and hostile lords will try and support disloyal lords with their armies.

Other highlights in this update include:

  • Combined production and finance menus to directly distribute resources to supplement the existing internal trade mechanics
  • Overhaul to Army loyalty, with different personalities prone to supporting different kinds of people
  • Streamlined city building – overhaul to storage, builders getting their own building, as well as new visual displays for distances between linked buildings.
  • Plenty of quality-of-life improvements from improved family relationship bonuses, to tech tree costs, and more.
  • Better bribes.

You can read more about the update in the official, kingdom-sized patch notes.

Norland is available on PC via Steam Early Access for a typical price of $29.99 / £24.99 / €29.99 / ¥3,980. A 35% discount is running from now until July 24. A press kit is available.
