A solo developer launches a naval sandbox demo where ship weight and wind angles actually matter

What if adding one more cannon could slow your ship enough to lose a race — or win a battle?

The Steam demo for Leonardo’s Island is now live, introducing a modular naval sandbox where players design their own sailing ships and every decision directly impacts performance at sea.

Unlike traditional naval games that offer pre-built ships, Leonardo’s Island focuses on engineering trade-offs. Hull width affects maneuverability and capacity. Sail types perform differently depending on wind angle. Cannons vary in firing arc, reload time, and weight. Ammunition weight determines penetration power.

Build too heavy, and your ship struggles to accelerate.
Build too light, and one hull breach can sink you.

Customization isn’t cosmetic — it changes how the ship sails and fights.

Players can experiment with extreme builds — from lightweight racing vessels to cannon-heavy floating batteries.

What’s included in the demo

  • 3 light hull types
  • 4 sail types with different wind-efficiency angles
  • 2 cannon types
  • 2 ammunition types: cannonballs and chain shots

Play modes:
  • Battle mode (tactical naval combat)
  • Regatta mode (skill-based racing)
  • "Around the Island" sandbox testing mode
  • Steam Friends mode for online play

The demo also introduces a naval progression system for unlocking new components and upgrades.

The full version will expand to 10 sails, 5 cannons, additional hull types, and more ammunition types.

Built solo

Leonardo’s Island is developed entirely by one creator. The demo marks a major milestone in development and is intended to gather player feedback ahead of full release.
