The Behemoth Announces Summer Release for Castle Crashers Painter Boss Paradise DLC

February 13, 2025 – Independent game developer and publisher The Behemoth is excited to announce that the Castle Crashers Painter Boss Paradise DLC is slated to release on Steam this summer! Inspired by the game’s iconic Painter Boss, the DLC will unveil custom character capabilities through the Steam Workshop and feature new art for all official playable characters, weapons, and the game map. Fans are able to wishlist the game right now!

Initially released for the Xbox Live Arcade in August 2008, Castle Crashers took the gaming world by storm with its colorful hand-drawn art, hilarious animation, and addicting beat em’ up combat. Its success led to digital releases for PlayStation, Windows (Steam), Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch, where it also received a physical edition in 2023! After 16 years of crashing castles, The Behemoth hopes to breathe new life into the game by allowing fans to unleash infinite possibilities of custom characters in the Steam Workshop.

“After 16 years, when it came time to give Castle Crashers some more love, I started by drawing brand new knights,” explained Dan Paladin, co-founder and art director at The Behemoth. “I was able to do this fairly quickly and thought, ‘Why shouldn't everyone have the ability to do this?’, so Painter Boss gave us all a perfect opportunity to make a natural shift to creating. People have wanted new characters so often – this allows the whole community to finally share more than we could ever give them!”

The Painter Boss Paradise DLC’s key features include:

  • Steam Workshop tool – create your own knight skins, upload to the Workshop, and share with the world!
  • New official character – play as Paint Junior and create powerful art to vanquish your foes!
  • Updated art for all official playable characters, weapons, and world map (with an option to toggle on or off).
  • An entire roster of wacky DLC characters created by The Behemoth’s art team for fans to directly download from the Workshop upon release.

The announcement coincides with the DLC’s Steam store page going live, in addition to a development update video on the team’s progress. Fans can wishlist the DLC on Steam today, where the team encourages the community to share their custom character ideas and leave feedback!

About The Behemoth

Founded in 2003, The Behemoth is an indie game developer and publisher that pioneered the flash-to-console scene with Alien Hominid in 2002. For two decades, the studio has continued to create memorable hand-drawn gaming experiences like Castle Crashers, BattleBlock Theater, and Pit People, with a deep love for co-op (and co-optional!) titles. Self-publishing their games across a variety of platforms, The Behemoth has remained true to their indie roots with a small team that doesn’t rush the development process, maintaining a healthy love for their game creations.
