Mafia game The Commission 1920 revamped in new update

ORLANDO, Fla. (June 11, 2021) — Orlando-based game development company 302 Interactive will be releasing a new update to The Commission 1920, a mafia-inspired strategy adventure game. It will allow players to customize their own mafia families and also participate in a new redesigned random event games system. The update launches June 25 on Steam.

Released back in February, The Commission 1920 is a turn-based strategy simulation game, following up on its prequel The Commission: Organized Crime Grand Strategy. Set in the gritty world of the 1920s organized crime, players stake their claim as Dons of different families within the fictitious city of New Shore and fight for ultimate control of all that defined the Prohibition era.

With the new update, adding a personal touch to a campaign is now possible. Players can now customize their own families by selecting from a variety of new family emblems, colors and traits. They can also create unique Don and family names. From the main menu, players can select “Custom Campaign” and take part in a one-of-a-kind family.

The new update also includes changes to the random events system in the game. With the new update, players can now participate in multiple events simultaneously, including new long-term events. They will now be located in the report panel rather than popping up at the start of a turn, allowing players to deal with them at their own leisure. Mandatory events will still prevent players from moving onto the next turn until they are completed.

The update also reworks small details to create a more cohesive gaming experience. When a Soldato or Capo is assassinated, the game will now show what areas were affected by the loss. Report entries will now also show if game assassinations resulted in any vacant assignments.

These changes point to a bigger direction 302 Interactive is taking with The Commission: 1920. “When we were first developing the game, our intent was to create something that had the feel of a board game with distinct personalities for each preset family. However, the design has gradually shifted toward being more of a simulator game,” stated Zachary Goodless, lead developer of the project. “With that comes the expectation that players can insert themselves into the game, and feel like they're expanding "their" mafia empire and not just taking on the role of an existing don.”

Goodless also comments on the big changes in the random events system within the game. “We were running into some limitations as a result of how we built it,” he states. “The upcoming event rework allows us to have multiple events running concurrently, and adds some new events as well.”

Moving closer to June 25, 302 Interactive will provide more details on the new content.
