Set in a mountain village recovering from a supernatural disaster, Seeds of Calamity invites players to farm magical plants, fish, cook, fight slimes, and dive into cozy seasonal rhythms with a fluffy companion by your side.
“I wanted to make a farming sim that feels like home — but in a world shaped by magic and memory,” says solo dev Jenny, known online as Laborious Lark.“It’s about staying in a fractured world, and helping it heal.”
🏡 A Story of Recovery, and Rediscovery
Twenty years after the Great Calamity, the land is finally healing. As a young adventurer, you leave the bustling capital to settle in a frontier village. Life here moves to the rhythm of seasons, friendships, and strange old magic. Build your farm, help your neighbors, and uncover the quiet joys of a world still carrying scars.
Your closest ally is the fluffy Spellbook Companion — a magical creature that catalogues your recipes, guides your quests, uncovers hidden treasures, and even casts spells during battle. It’s part encyclopedia, part inventory, part sidekick — and all charm.
🧵 A Solo Dev with a Big Dream
Seeds of Calamity is the debut title of Jenny, known online as Laborious Lark, who spent five years building the game solo — after hours, alongside a full-time job.
“I’m a web developer for my day job,” she writes. “When I decided to get serious about designing a game, I just wanted to make something small and cozy — like a fan letter.”
“But once I started, I couldn’t stop. It became the most creatively rewarding — and most challenging — thing I’ve ever done.”
She taught herself pixel art, animation, and game design from scratch. Even the festival mini-games and battle mechanics were custom-built.
“I had never created a single piece of pixel art before starting this game.”
“Turn-based combat is like a puzzle. I wanted each enemy to feel unique.”
“And I really loved coding festival loops — little games within the game.”
“Seeds of Calamity is one of those games that completely pulls you in — you sit down to try something quickly and end up playing for hours,” says Jakub Radkowski, CEO of Pretty Soon.
“We love working with developers like Jenny. She’s incredibly talented, persistent, and humble — and she’s built something truly special here. It’s a game with heart, and it shows in every detail.”
