Defeating Games for Charity 2025 Benefit for Video Game History Foundation Returns This Weekend After Raising $4000 Last Year

January 20, 2025  This weekend, January 25-26 2025, Defeating Games for Charity returns for its second annual video game marathon on Twitch to raise money for the Video Game History Foundation. This followup event features more games and more streamers to raise more money. The VGHF’s work is increasingly important, since 87% of games are out of print and critically endangered

Body:

Over the course of two days, over a dozen small streamers will be playing iconic games that span video game history, the earliest released in 1980 and the latest released in 2024. These include Minecraft, Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Pikmin, The Secret of Monkey Island, Kerbal Space Program, Trespasser, and more. The Defeating Games team is eager to reunite and leverage their expertise in gaming, streaming, and fundraising to show off great gameplay for a great cause.

This year’s event features skilled players defeating games in a variety of ways. These include streams by veteran game developer Tim Longo Jr (Creative Director on Star Wars, Halo, and Tomb Raider game series) and special appearances from Video Game History Foundation staff members, alongside an international cadre of game experts. There will be games finished as quickly as possible, games beaten without taking any hits, games played with all the items randomized, games showcasing the hardest difficulty modes, games exhibited by their developers, and games analyzed for their themes and impact. The Defeating Games team all believe in exploring the entirety of games, and inviting others to reflect on games along with them. This conviction that games are worth celebrating and preserving aligns perfectly with the values of The Video Game History Foundation.
