San Francisco, CA — April 28, 2025 — Clockwork Labs is excited to announce that BitCraft Online, its community-driven sandbox MMORPG, will be open sourced following the game’s upcoming Early Access launch on Steam.
Set in a fully editable, procedurally generated world, BitCraft gives players the freedom to shape landscapes, build societies, and form lasting relationships. Now, with the decision to open source the game’s server code, Clockwork Labs is empowering the community to take an even greater role in shaping the future of the game—and the MMO genre.
Why This Matters-
Democratizing MMO Development: BitCraft’s code will serve as a blueprint for indie developers tackling large-scale, persistent worlds.
-
Encouraging Collaboration: Community members will be able to suggest improvements, build tools, and even fork the game.
-
Giving Back to Open Source: The project is a tribute to the open source ecosystem that made BitCraft possible.
Certain assets such as IP, art and music will remain proprietary, but a large portion of the backend will be available under a recognized open source license. Open sourcing will begin after a stable Early Access release, which remains the developers highest priority.
