Indie developer daimaGAME will release How Do the Cicadas Live?, a generational, life-cycle simulation action game about raising cicadas, battling formidable foes, and passing on life to the next generation, on Steam in September 2025.
Set in the summer countryside of Japan, this simulation action game lets you live out the short yet intense life of a single cicada. Soar freely through the vast rural landscapes, seek out mates to carry on your lineage, and defeat powerful enemies that await across the land.
The player challenges these powerful foes—whether by defeating them in battle or, if they cannot win, by mating and entrusting their will to the next generation. Each generation inherits and strengthens the cicada’s abilities, bringing the player closer to overcoming once-insurmountable enemies. When that long-sought victory is finally achieved, a deep sense of accomplishment awaits.
"How will you live, and what will you leave behind?" Through the life of a cicada, the game offers an experience of both fragility and strength.
Breeding System
In addition to leveling up, the game features a unique “breeding” system as a core mechanic for strengthening your cicada. Fly freely across the open fields in search of high-ability mates, and breed to produce the next generation with improved traits. This breeding cycle—passing down abilities and evolving over generations—is at the very heart of the gameplay.
Vitality System
To embody the fleeting nature of life, the game introduces a “Vitality” stat. From the very start of the game, this value continuously decreases. When it reaches zero, your life ends, and it’s game over. Within this limited lifespan, you must fight, explore, find a mate, and ensure the survival of the next generation. This ticking clock makes every choice—what you do, and what you leave behind—matter.
Open World
The game’s setting, the summer countryside of Japan, is brought to life through a vast open-world design. As a cicada, you can fly freely, exploring treetops, grasslands, rice fields, lakes, and more. The constant aerial perspective, unique to being an insect, transforms familiar landscapes into something new and expansive, offering players a fresh sense of discovery. This is more than just a map—it’s a living summer countryside.
