WonderLang Beyond brings intermediate language practice into an investigation RPG
Kickstarter opens November 10, following the released original WonderLang
Paris, France — French independent developer Jonathan Bariller has announced WonderLang Beyond, a standalone role-playing adventure for intermediate language learners. Its Kickstarter campaign opens November 10, 2026, at 16:00 Paris / 10:00 a.m. US Eastern. The project is targeting a late-July 2027 release on PC, Mac, Android and iOS.
WonderLang Beyond is designed to help learners spend more time engaging with their target language. Players explore settlements, speak with characters and investigate mysteries. Unfamiliar words can be looked up in context, sentences can be explained, and replies can be built word by word, typed with a visual keyboard or spoken aloud. Vocabulary encountered during the adventure returns in spaced-repetition battles.
The sequel introduces knowledge-based progression. A conversation in one region may contain a clue that becomes useful somewhere else. Several regions open early, allowing players to follow multiple leads rather than finish every task in one large village before continuing. Visible monster shadows replace purely random encounters, while new and returning mini-games offer different forms of practice.
Teaching focuses on late-A2 and B1 material, with modes for A2, B1 and B2 learners. These modes mainly change challenge complexity, assistance and review demands. The seven launch languages are French, Latin American Spanish, German, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and English. Italian and Portuguese are conditional stretch goals. The story can be understood without playing the original.
WonderLang’s original Kickstarter was successfully funded in March 2024. Its first French-learning version released in November 2024, followed by additional languages, content and interface improvements. The released original uses the chosen language in dialogue, exploration, puzzles and combat. It is available on Windows, Mac, Steam Deck and Android, with iOS planned, and includes English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese, plus Arabic and Russian.
WonderLang Beyond is built in a substantially customized RPG Maker MZ engine. Production combines purchased, commissioned and AI-generated artwork, synthetic voices checked by native speakers, and AI-assisted development. Funding goals would expand commissioned art, an original soundtrack and native voice acting. The game’s language content is fixed rather than generated live during play.
