Mobile Games Market Review: AI-generated card battler succeeds in Japan, while GTA-inspired One World RP makes major comeback

GameRefinery, a Liftoff company, has shared its latest monthly report covering May’s most significant mobile game market trends. Backed by the latest data and expert insights from GameRefinery’s analysts, the report highlights all the new releases, performance-boosting live events, and notable game updates that have risen to the forefront in May 2025.

Here’s what GameRefinery found:

  • Scopely’s Monopoly GO! launched a massive collaboration with Star Wars which introduced Star Wars-themed limited time events, rewards, collectible albums and mini games.

  • The GameRefinery analysts highlighted Vertex Games’ bingo game, Bingo Voyage, as an excellent example of hybridisation in the casual casino genre. It introduced a race-themed new event type that encouraged players to team up and rank up. The game’s revenue continues to scale since its launch in November last year, mainly due to its hybridised minigames forming an essential part of its UA strategy.

  • Supercell made some significant changes to Squad Busters by reworking its whole core and meta. The GameRefinery analysts can talk through these changes on a call or email, but they involved a complete overhaul of how heroes and upgrade systems work. These changes were made to presumably boost the game’s appeal and revenue which has been on a downhill trajectory since launch.

  • Following Epic’s victory over Apple in court, the mobile version of Fortnite now shows webstore pop-ups in-game, advertising 20% Epic rewards cashback on purchases made in the webstore (Epic Games Store), and a direct option for players to choose between appstore or webstore purchase whenever making V-Bucks purchases on mobile.

  • Tsukuyomi: The Divine Hunter is a new roguelike card battler where card artwork is AI generated. Artwork is influenced by renowned video game artist and designer, Kazuma Kanekos (best known for his work on the Shin Megami series) which resulted in the game’s brief appearance in Japan’s top-grossing charts. This is an interesting game that people in the West aren’t talking about and the GameRefinery analysts can provide commentary on game mechanics and more.

  • Another interesting game worth exploring is One State RP: Role Play Online, a GTA-style open world game released in 2022. It reached an all-time high for daily revenue in May, likely due to the hype around GTA VI and the fact there are no real GTA competitors in the mobile market. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
