Mobile Games Market Review: Epic legal victory sees rise in Web Value Offers

GameRefinery, a Liftoff company, has unveiled its newest report on the mobile games market. Backed by the latest data and expert insights from GameRefinery’s analysts, the report highlights all the new releases, performance-boosting live events, and notable game updates that shaped July and August 2025.

Here’s what GameRefinery found:

  • Epic’s legal victory over Apple and Google has initiated a huge market shift. There has been a spike in web value offers, which strive to avoid App Store fees by encouraging players to visit external web stores to make purchases. Coin Master is one example of an app offering better prices and bundles when purchasing outside the app.

  • Destiny: Rising, the mobile version of Bungie and Sony’s popular sci-fi RPG shooter, debuted at the top of the download charts at #54 in the top-grossing chart before rocketing to #GR 20 after just three days. Destiny: Rising brings the same gameplay format and mechanics from the original game to mobile with the addition of gacha monetization.

  • Following a summer of BBQs and picnics, ingredient gathering/formula events have taken center stage with major games like Coin Master and Disney Solitaire each launching their own versions. Coin Master’s Coin Cafe event and Disney Solitaire’s Ratatouille-themed Chef’s Kitchen event both offered players rewards for collecting ingredients to complete orders.

  • Over the last two months, we have seen a rise in autochess-style modes that pit players against each other. Clash Royale's "Merge Tactics" and Zenless Zone Zero's "En-Nah" Chess Legend are some examples of new auto-chess-style mini-games that have significantly impacted DAUs and engagement, suggesting a growing interest in this genre within midcore mobile titles.

  • Developers have continued to innovate when it comes to social and monetization systems in mobile games, with several apps experimenting with new achievement systems, monetization models and events.

    • Cash Tornado Slots added a full achievement system with a leaderboard and cosmetic rewards to drive long-term engagement and social recognition.

    • Coin Master is experimenting with new monetization models like "Progressive Bundle: Video Value" (ad-monetized offers) and "Scratch Time" (gacha-based scratch cards).

    • Free Fire introduced "Squad Treasure," a unique social top-up event that incentivizes group purchases for shared rewards.
