Renowned Japanese programmer and director Naoki Hamaguchi, best known globally for his work on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will be one of the main attractions at this year’s Brasil Game Show. The international guest will participate in Meet & Greet sessions, BGS Talks panels and the opening ceremonies of the largest gaming event of the Americas on October 10th and 11th.
Hamaguchi began his career in the gaming industry in the 2000s, as part of the development team for the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy as a main programmer. After leading the Mobius Final Fantasy project, Hamaguchi took on the role of co-director of Final Fantasy VII Remake and later directed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, a critically acclaimed title that earned an average score of 92 on Metacritic, based on 145 expert reviews.
A Journey of Passion and Excellence
Hamaguchi-san was introduced to the Final Fantasy franchise in 1994, when he came across Final Fantasy VI. The impact of that experience inspired the young Japanese gamer to pursue a career in the gaming industry, with the dream of creating his own stories.
For this, he joined Square Enix in 2003 and worked on the visual effects for Final Fantasy XII, released years later. After excelling as a programmer on the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, he was promoted to Project Lead on Mobius Final Fantasy.
His rise continued in the following years, when he joined director Tetsuya Nomura as a co-director on one of the company's most ambitious projects: the remake of the acclaimed Final Fantasy VII. Hamaguchi later served as a director for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second main installment and standalone game in the trilogy.
His directing style is known for striking a balance between staying true to the legacy of the classic games and boldly modernizing battle systems, storytelling, and world-building for new generations. One of its trademarks is the construction of immersive worlds, with careful attention to the emotions of the characters and the fluidity of the player experience.
"In his nearly 20-year career, Naoki Hamaguchi has become one of the most prominent figures in the industry, participating in and directing major game projects in such an important franchise," says Brasil Game Show CEO, Marcelo Tavares. "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was a landmark reimagining of a classic, combining nostalgia and innovation under Hamaguchi-san’s direction. His presence at BGS will further enhance this year’s edition, which marks the beginning of a very special chapter for BGS."
A New Era
BGS 2025 will be held from October 9th to 12th, at Distrito Anhembi, in São Paulo, and marks a new era of the event. This year's convention will occupy five pavilions of the modern space with major advances in the experience of exhibitors and the public.
