Monk Took Book announced by SquarePlay Games

London, 19 September, 2025 - SquarePlay Games, the two-person team behind metro-management sim Overcrowd, have today revealed their latest game Monk Took Book.

The 1 to 4 player online co-operative game is described by the pair as an “action memory game”. Set in a medieval monastic library, players are tasked with organising and expanding a book collection by day, then fetching book orders at night.

But the monks are not left in peace to their labours, as they will face a host of challenges beyond remembering where they put their books, including fantastical creatures and fires to contend with.

“The game was partially inspired by a memory game I played as a child called Pelmanism, where you had to remember where face down picture cards were,” said developer Alastair McQueen. “More recently was the excellent Wilmot’s Warehouse by Hollow Ponds and Richard Hogg which had some similar elements.”

“We wanted to spice up this mini-genre of organisational memory games by adding online co-op, first-person combat, physics and this idea of carrying around and sharing ladders and other tools,“ he explained. “All set in this kind of spooky, interesting space of a library in a medieval monastery.”

As detailed on the Steam page, players can unlock more rooms and shelf space for their ever-expanding book collection, as well as procuring the various weapons and tools they’ll need to deal with fires, ghosts, and monsters that lurk in the dark.

Watching the trailer suggests a quirky memory game with elements of job simulation and a good dose of first-person action, though the game also supports a third-person camera.

If you’d like to organise, remember and retrieve books by fire light in a gothic monastic library, don’t forget to wishlist this.
