Don thy habit and enter the monastic library. Satisfy thy monkly urges… to organise innumerable vast and weighty tomes! Each is inscribed with a symbol and thou must recollect where all are placed for delivery to the Scribes.

Monk Took Book is the third game of UK indie developer couplet Alastair and Sarah (SquarePlay Games).

“‘Tis a game borne of the unholy union between Wilmot’s Warehouse and Roadside Research,” quoth Alastair.

“The game hath taken aeons (two years) to complete and may be our finest yet,” he added.

Monk Took Book hath many Noble Virtues:

  • Play by thine self or co-operatively with up to three fellow monks.

  • Categorise and file books according to thy wishes that thou may remember them later.

  • Fend off vexatious nighttime hauntings - ghosts, thieves and viking raids - to deliver book orders to the Scribes.

  • Avail thyself of librarian tools at the Shoppe - quill, dagger, ladder and more - and unlock powerful Perkes.

  • Marvel at the immersion of simulated torch embers, fire, and pales of water.

  • Partake of the charming medieval tranquility of the Library at Holy Island.

  • Customise thy experience with multitudes of gameplay options to make the experience more relaxed or chaotic.

  • Unbesmirched by A.I. - crafted by hand of fair maiden and gallant squire alone (including this press release).

Commenting on Monk Took Book's apparent similarity to recent games “‘Tis no mere “tidy up” game,” the game's fictitious Abbot muttered.

“Precise placement of parchment is merely a prelude to the primary problem,” he proclaimed, pompously. “Thy true task is to agree upon how thou shalt organise thy tomes with thy fellow novices. That, and to conquer thine own weak and feeble MEMORY!!!”

Remarking upon the decision to use cod-medieval in the press release, Sarah noted: “‘Tis fiendishly bothersome to get noticed these days. The esteemed press care not for little indies such as we,” sobbing dramatically. “And I’m too old for TikTok,” she added.

Heretofore SquarePlay hath created masterworks Overcrowd: A Commute ‘Em Up and Space Trash Scavenger.

Note to the editor: If thou doth prefer the non-medieval version, read forth:

Monk Took Book launches today on Steam for PC, for $8.99/£7.99/€8.99. The game will be discounted by 10% for the first 14 days of launch.

Monk Took Book is a co-op game about organising, stacking and remembering where you put hundreds of books in a cozy-creepy medieval library. It is the third game by the indie dev duo previously responsible for the well-received Overcrowd: A Commute ‘Em Up and Space Trash Scavenger.

The new game is a novel mix of the now burgeoning “friendslop” genre, coupled with a memory challenge inspired by Wilmot’s Warehouse.

Alastair McQueen makes up one half of UK-based SquarePlay Games. “Everyone knows you can't judge a book by its cover. But in Monk Took Book you have to,” he said. “Because the books don’t have titles, only a picture on the front, players have to decide together how to organise them, using their own logic.”

“And then they have to remember where they put them,” he added.

The game also features some other systems to spice things up, such as ghostly hauntings, book thieves, pests, fire, physics and some (entirely optional) viking raider combat, all of which can be tackled using various tools and weapons.
