A Caveman with a Cause: Primal Planet Demo Enters Steam Next Fest

What if the most emotional story at Steam Next Fest didn’t have a single line of dialogue?

The dinovania Primal Planet casts you as a prehistoric dad, fighting to protect his family from dinosaurs, savage tribes, and… ancient aliens. When an early trailer debuted on IGN last year, it went viral — earning almost 400K views, 20K likes, and hundreds of heartfelt comments. Now, with a newly updated demo, players can experience the world behind the pixels.

The new demo launches June 9 as part of Steam Next Fest — but creators and press can already request their access.

Primal Planet - Official Reveal Trailer

About the Game

Developed by solo creator Seethingswarm and published by Pretty Soon (Backpack Hero, Havendock), Primal Planet is a dinosaur-powered metroidvania. Its retro pixel-art visuals evoke classic 16-bit adventures. But unlike typical genre entries, this one blends in survival-crafting mechanics and full local co-op support.
You’ll explore mysterious biomes, gather resources, cook meals, build tools, and care for your vulnerable home — all while navigating the emotional stakes of a heartfelt story told entirely without words.

And you don’t have to do it alone. A tiny dino sidekick (Sinosauropteryx) fights alongside you, and a second player can jump in at any time to take control for local co-op. It’s a game about taking care of someone close — whether it’s your daughter or your dino. Pass the controller to a person you love and suddenly it’s not just those funny pixel-art characters looking out for each other.

What Makes It Special

  • Retro looks, modern gameplay – organic crafting, environmental puzzles, and village care – a fresh take on metroidvania.
  • No dialogue – just gasps and gestures. Still, it breaks your heart.
  • Explore the primeval – discover diverse biomes, encounter a vast array of dinosaurs, from the majestic Apatosaurus to the terrifying Carnotaurus.
  • Play together – Local co-op lets a second player join as a small dinosaur sidekick.
