Starbreeze enters a partnership with Stockholm Syndrome to expand the PAYDAY universe

STOCKHOLM, February 16, 2023 – Starbreeze AB today announces that it has entered into an agreement with the Los Angeles-based production company Stockholm Syndrome, founded by the Swedish entrepreneur and media personality, Peter Settman. Under the agreement, Stockholm Syndrome receives an exclusivity period during which time they can represent the PAYDAY IP and work on it with talent such as writers and directors. The goal for the project is to develop a PAYDAY story for tv or film, and find a partner to distribute it worldwide.

With an installed base of almost 40 million, the smash hit game has a long history of players engaging in the story about the PAYDAY-gang. This year the IP is celebrating its 12 years anniversary since the release of the first PAYDAY game. Since then, players regularly get to enjoy new content and chapters in the saga thanks to Starbreeze’s Games-as-a-Service-model.

“We are very pleased to partner with Stockholm Syndrome with the mutual ambition to bring our franchise to new heights and an even broader audience. It is a milestone on our journey to create IP that expands beyond the realm of games, and Stockholm Syndrome is a great partner and meshes perfectly with our mission to build an even broader and more engaged community.”, says Tobias Sjögren, CEO of Starbreeze.

“We’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of different IPs over the years, and PAYDAY has always been on our radar. It has a cinematic quality and narrative that lends itself to a fantastic live-action adaptation.”, says Peter Settman, Founder of Stockholm Syndrome.

Stockholm Syndrome is a fully independent production company helmed by CEO Greg Lipstone and Founder Peter Settman. Stockholm Syndrome currently has both television and theatrical projects in development with buyers in multiple markets, including North America, UK, and the Nordics.

Greg Lipstone adds, “The timing couldn't be more perfect. The appetite for strong gaming IP’s with a highly engaged fan base, is bigger than ever before. Just look at the success of The Last of Us, Halo, and The Witcher all based on well-known games”.
