Christina Sochor Trio Turns Mario, Pokémon, and Zelda Into Live Jazz

GameChops releases Not a Phone in Sight, the first album by Hawaiʻi pianist Christina Sochor, featuring melodies from Super Mario, Pokémon, Zelda, Animal Crossing, and more

PHILADELPHIA - October 16, 2026 - GameChops and pianist Christina Sochor are thrilled to release Not a Phone in Sight, a progressive, live jazz album that reharmonizes melodies from Super Mario, Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing, Katamari Damacy, and Cuphead. Sochor and her trio, with drummer Abe Lagrimas and double bassist Eric Nakamoto (both equally active in the arrangements), build each track on a familiar game melody, with Sochor’s expressive piano leading the way. The album is her first full-length release with GameChops, following the singles “Bob-omb Battlefield” and “National Park,” and is out now on all digital storefronts and streaming platforms:

Highlights include the Super Mario Galaxy-inspired “Rosalina’s Waltz,” the Ocarina of Time classic “Song of Storms,” and the Pokémon Heart/Gold and Soul/Silver favorite “National Park,” with the Mario Kart Wii staple “Coconut Mall,” Cuphead’s “Victory Tune,” and the Animal Crossing: New Horizons closer “Nook’s Cranny Before Closing” rounding out the set. Sochor will celebrate the release with an album release concert at Blue Note Hawaiʻi on Wednesday, November 11, joined by special guests.

“This album was a passion project idea I’d had for a while," notes Christina Sochor. "Gen 4 Pokémon soundtracks are part of why I started learning piano at 9, so it was a joy to record some of my personal favorite game tunes, like ‘Nook’s Cranny Before Closing,’ ‘Rosalina’s Waltz,’ and ‘Guardian Battle,’ in the styles of my jazz piano icons Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, and McCoy Tyner. The title comes from a meme of older folks lined up at slot machines captioned ‘not a phone in sight, just people living in the moment,’ which is why our album art shows us all playing video games."

  1. Bob-Omb Battlefield (Mario 64)
  2. Rosalina’s Comet Observatory (Super Mario Galaxy)
