When Farming Sims Meet JRPGs: Seeds of Calamity Launches in Early Access, May 28

What if the quiet small town you pass through in a JRPG... was the game — and you could farm in it? A solo-developed game five years in the making offers an answer.

Set in a quiet mountain town slowly recovering from a supernatural disaster, Seeds of Calamity invites players to grow crops, befriend villagers, explore dungeons, and take part in seasonal festivals — all alongside a fluffy Spellbook Companion.

The turn-based combat and storytelling evoke the charm of classic JRPGs, while the farming and community life offer the warmth and rhythm of beloved cozy sims.

From Fan to Creator

It began like so many childhood dreams do — with the urge to create your own version of something you love.

That familiar impulse: to invent your own band, sketch your own fantasy map, design your own game. For Jenny (aka Laborious Lark) — a programmer from Wisconsin — that impulse took root in farming sims. She had spent hundreds of hours with them. Tending fields. Naming chickens. Watching pixel sunsets. Eventually, the pull became too strong to ignore.

“At first, I just wanted to make my own farming sim,” she says. “Something small and cozy. Like a fan letter.”
But as she built her world, another influence surfaced — one that had shaped her imagination just as deeply: JRPGs. And with it, a question:

“What if the small town where a great calamity happened… was the entire game? What would it mean to stay and help it heal?”

A World Worth Rebuilding

That question grew roots.

The result is Seeds of Calamity — a game not about saving the world, but staying in it. Helping it heal. Watching it grow again, one crop, one neighbor, one gentle day at a time.

“I didn’t just want to make a farming sim. I wanted to make one that feels like home — but in a world shaped by magic and memory.”

Jenny has been quietly working on the game for the past five years — late at night, on weekends, after her full-time job as a software engineer. It’s her first title. And a deeply personal one.

“It may look small at first glance — but it isn’t,” says Jakub Radkowski, CEO of Pretty Soon  — the game’s indie publisher. “This is a deep, feature-rich game. Even on day one in Early Access, it offers tons of possibilities and hours of fun. And yes — it’s full of soul.”
