The Robert L Johnson of Esports and Gaming Press Release

The Robert L Johnson of Esports and Gaming

November 19, 2020; Atlanta, GA—BESN.TV, with Ureeka, are proud to present our founder’s story, “Tim Fields: From Sega to Self-Starter.”

The 13-minute video shows the also CEO discussing his life, —from the moment he received a Sega to the realization that black gamers needed a place for them—his journey navigating the video game industry and the importance of BESN.TV to the community it hopes to serve.

A “gamer since birth,” in his own words, Fields is—according to Ureeka—“the man who is...bent on making space in the esports and gaming world for Black folks to shine.”

In Atlanta, he helped start an event called Smash Thursdays, which really opened his eyes to the disparity of representation in the gaming community.

“Casual gamers...come to a location,” Fields explains in the video, “and people were just gaming and having a good time. I noticed they were predominantly Black—there were actually a lot of Black professional gamers...coming too. I’m like, ‘Yo, why aren’t people really spotlighting these kids?’ So, [I thought], ‘Let’s do a network for them.’”

When he first started in the industry credentials were important, but things have changed since then with the rise of social media.

In the video, he also discusses the origin of his screen name “Thug-Geek,” the importance of the impact BESN.TV has had on the Black gaming community and stepping into his power as a founder.

“People always say... ‘Don’t take it personal, it’s just business.’ No.” He stresses that even if you get a thousand nos, five yeses are worth it.
