Hell Wait is a mahjong deckbuilder roguelike. Lured in by promises of clearing debts, the player must survive multiple mahjong matches to make it out alive.

The player chooses a starting deck and must beat the target score each match, by forming the best hand they can. At the same time, they must avoid dealing in. Between matches the player can use money earned to buy Jokers, Pacts, and Blessings. Jokers generally improve scoring. Pacts are used to rig the deck by enhancing tiles or changing their suit. Blessings strengthen Yaku, which are used for scoring.

The game is based on riichi mahjong, but some of the more complex elements of that are exposed as difficulty settings instead. With this, and the enemy stating which tiles he will wait for, the game is more accessible to mahjong novices.

Key features
  • Riichi mahjong rules with Balatro-style scoring against a rising target
  • Over 100 Joker tiles affecting scoring, drawing, and the rules of the game itself
  • Make dark Pacts to manipulate tiles, and use Blessings to elevate specific yaku
  • Enhance tiles with Materials, Stickers, and Dora; switch between tile sets to change how runs play
  • Boss matches with brutal restrictions on what you can call, draw, or hold
  • Fingers as HP. Deal in, or fall behind, and lose one. Survive fifteen matches to clear the debt.
  • No mahjong knowledge required - the opponent will tell you what tile he's waiting on (but he might be lying)
Availability

Hell Wait is in development for PC (Steam). A demo will be available for the June Steam Next Fest. The release date is planned to be later in 2026.
