First of all, congratulations! Hidalgo was fully funded in just over 24 hours and tripled its goal by the end of the project. What was the team’s reaction to this rapid support, and how did it influence your plans for the project?
Thank you! The team felt euphoric seeing that we achieved it in 24 hours. Considering it’s our first Kickstarter, we didn’t know what to expect after analyzing the competition, but in the end, we accomplished more than anticipated, which will lead to improvements in some systems we wanted to implement with the stretch goals. Kickstarter success strategies crowdfunding platforms overview.
What inspired Hidalgo’s unique art style, and what was the process for refining its visual identity?
Hidalgo's style aims to be a cozy approach to Cervantes' novel. We wanted to use recycled materials and puppets since the story is focused on a small performance by a mother to her children, as she helps them understand the story of Don Quixote, by bringing it to life.
Backers rallied behind Hidalgo’s campaign. What elements of your pitch, story, art, or gameplay do you think resonated most with them?
The artistic style was a good foundation, but the idea and the story were what convinced backers the most.
Indie studios often juggle vision and resources. What bold creative choices shaped Hidalgo, and how did you navigate their challenges?
Parallax games with objects from the meta-environment greatly helped us save resources and use existing elements to create new things, like the giant's puzzle. Many of the pieces can also be salvaged and reused, with altered textures, at other points in the game to save resources. Tricks like these are very common in the industry and help us keep producing with less artistic workload during less critical moments.
Adapting Don Quixote for a modern game is ambitious. What were the biggest challenges, and how did you decide what to preserve or reinvent?
As with most indie games, we had to narrow down the story, choosing which scenes from the novel to tell, and that was difficult because almost all the stories in the original book are fantastic, but we couldn’t include them all due to our limited resources. To address this, we tried to reference some of the stories we couldn’t make playable through dialogues and narrative moments.
Crowdfunding is competitive. What strategies helped Hidalgo’s Kickstarter stand out and sustain backer enthusiasm?
The advertising campaign worked very well, along with all the marketing efforts we made on social media, featuring unique art and attractive rewards like the figurine, the handmade amigurumi sheep, or the deck of playing cards.
How did Don Quixote and Sancho Panza’s relationship in the original story help shape Hidalgo’s co-op gameplay?
Their relationship is unique and has inspired other duos over the years. Sancho and Quixote cannot function separately. Each has abilities that complement the other, both in the novel and in the game. We are trying to balance both characters so that the player doesn’t feel bored playing with one or the other.
What challenges arose in making that co-op dynamic engaging?
What’s giving us the most headaches are, above all, the more technical things, like split-screen or controls on keyboard and controller. The UI will also undergo some changes, as well as some tutorial missions.
Hidalgo’s stretch goals unlocked new features. How did you decide which goals to prioritize, and what challenges do you foresee in delivering them?
We decided to prioritize the goals that we were most interested in showcasing, the ones we had the clearest vision for and thought could bring the most life to the game. Problems will arise, but we’ll solve them as we always do.
Building trust with backers is crucial. How do you plan to keep the community engaged and informed during development?
We intend to continue our already established and frequent communication through newsletters with the backers, informing them of each important milestone reached in the process. Together with the community, we want to show that the trust over 1,000 people have placed in us is going to create something beautiful!
What key advice would you share with indie devs launching a Kickstarter today?
Be prepared, don’t launch recklessly, and try to find the best moment to go live. Prepare a lot of material to use on social media so you don’t run out of time later, and above all, be ready for last-minute changes.
