KYC puts the player behind the counter of Mehtos 247, a gas station on a dead highway outside Highwater, Colorado. Suneil Shrivastava is an international student who lost his scholarship and took the only job available to him. He cannot quit, because not graduating means deportation. Something behind the locked backroom door is hungry, and the job slowly becomes deciding which customers it gets. The horror is how quickly routine work makes that feel normal.
The game is adapted scene by scene from my horror novel.
I wrote KYC as a novel about how an ordinary job can make terrible things feel normal. A game hands the reader the choice, and that is where the horror lives.
KEY FEATURES
- The job is real: point of sale, cash and change-making, fuel pumps, restocking and cleaning
- Nothing floats in the air, everything is as close to real as possible.
- Conversations have consequences: who you are rude to at 2 a.m. decides who helps you at 4
- The customers are not fodder: authored characters with names and routines
- You are the horror: you decide who does not leave
