PLAY-DOH PLATFORMER SCHMUTZNIK LAUNCHES

Schmutznik, a platform game where the art is made from play-doh, has just launched on Steam and Itch.io. Created by solo developer and illustrator Avram Dumitrescu, the game allows players to control a robot through 35 underground caves, navigating environmental hazards and mutated creatures, and ever-rising damage to your avatar. Each cave introduces a new mechanic or gameplay idea, keeping the experience fresh and interesting. Instead of jumping, players reach higher platforms with a never-ending extendable neck.

Dumitrescu, who, as an illustrator, has contributed to publications such as Highlights for Children, Lagom, and the Ulster Tatler, wanted to explore and experiment with many gameplay ideas he had: “I have wanted to write a game since getting my first computer, an Atari 800XL, when I was 10,” he said, “and thanks to modern game development tools being so much more approachable, I was able to play with the platform genre, mixing in all kinds of influences and ideas.” Visually, Dumitrescu tried implementing a range of visual styles. He said, “Working with play-doh is a little cumbersome because you have to model, photograph, edit, and finally import the images into the software but it is ultimately worth it because of the unique look the game has.” Music was created by Sul Ross State University professor Jeffery Meyer.
