Dystopia: Contest of Heroes Launches Exclusively on AppGallery

Beetroot Lab turns to Huawei for official game launch featuring former UFC champion Conor McGregor as in-game character

Huawei, the leading global technology company, has announced that Beetroot Lab, the growing independent game development studio, is launching its new post-apocalyptic, cyberpunk style game, Dystopia: Contest of Heroes exclusively on the AppGallery.

Dystopia: Contest of Heroes is a free-to-play, multiplayer combat game featuring high quality, intense colour graphics and a collection of fully customisable 3D heroes with player-controlled abilities. Set in a dystopian New York in 2065, the objective of the game is for players to build an empire by taking over districts and collecting sci-fi themed gear, to manage raids on other players and build social alliances.

A key feature of this strategy title, which has been three years in development, is a series of in-game tournaments which allow multiple players from all over the world to compete. This is further enhanced by an annual tournament, hosted by the game’s brand character Conor McGregor*, the Irish professional mixed martial artist and boxer, and former UFC champion.

Huawei is working in close partnership with Latvia-based Beetroot Lab and supporting the launch of the game across its AppGallery platform worldwide. The game is exclusively available to new Huawei customers before becoming available on other platforms, and users will be encouraged to install it immediately after unboxing their new device through a recommended app prompt. In the coming weeks both parties will co-operate to grow the number of users and revenue of the game, with Huawei promoting the game across its marketing channels, including but not limited to featuring it inside multiple AppGallery touchpoints and advertising on Huawei Ads network. Currently, AppGallery is available in more than 170 countries with 500 million monthly active users globally.

“The benefit of launching a game on AppGallery first is that we will put the full force of our considerable marketing machine behind the game to boost its profile and quickly encourage downloads,” said Wang Heng, Vice President, Global Partnerships and Eco-Development at Huawei Consumer Business Group, CEE and Nordics. “Once it becomes available on other platforms, it will then compete in a very crowded gaming market, but by then it will have already been promoted to millions of gamers.”

Such is the appeal of Dystopia, during a soft test launch in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Nordic countries, with a controlled amount of promotion, the game achieved an impressive 7% D28 retention – 7% of users who installed the game were still playing it after 28 days – and conversion to paid users reached 3.2% in tier 2 markets and close to 5% in Tier 1 markets.

“We are very excited to partner with Huawei AppGallery, and appreciate their huge interest in helping us to globally launch our latest mobile strategy title: Dystopia: Contest of Heroes,” said Davis Ziedins, Co-Founder and Business Developer of Beetroot Lab. “Having the well-known celebrity Conor McGregor as our business partner and the face of our game, puts a huge responsibility on our shoulders, so it is important to be working with a trusted technology partner like Huawei, which is bolstering every step of our integration, on-boarding and user acquisition.”

Beetroot Lab has benefited from Huawei’s extensive technical support throughout the integration of the game onto the AppGallery. This has included the use of kits that Huawei Mobile Services has developed, specifically the Account Kit, which provides developers with simple, secure and quick sign-in and authorisation, and the In-App-Purchases Kit, to facilitate in-app purchases of virtual products and enable easy payment. This support is part of Huawei’s commitment to developers and helps them to realise the massive business benefits and enhanced user reach of an app store that, in 2020 alone, enabled 294 billion downloads globally.

Development Project Manager Andrew Volkovs at Beetroot Lab, said “The whole process of publishing the game on AppGallery was very quick and smooth, and our developers experienced proactive support from the team on email or via video calls whenever we needed it.”

The game is now available on AppGallery or can be downloaded here.
