Cult Classic The Dark Eye Returns to Steam as Edgar Allan Poe's Interactive Horror: 1995 Edition

The nightmare is reborn: Wishlist the faithful restoration of Inscape's avant-garde masterpiece, featuring the voice of William S. Burroughs.

NEW DELHI, January 24, 2026 – GMedia is proud to announce that the Steam store page for Edgar Allan Poe's Interactive Horror: 1995 Edition is now officially live. Originally released to critical acclaim as The Dark Eye, this faithful restoration invites horror enthusiasts and retro-gaming historians to revisit the 1995 avant-garde masterpiece developed by the visionary studio Inscape.

Slated for release later this year, this edition is a pristine preservation of one of the most unique and disturbing experiences of the CD-ROM era. Powered by ScummVM, the game brings the uncanny, stop-motion nightmare of the mid-90s to modern systems without compromising its original, raw, and psychological aesthetic.

A Descent into Madness

Edgar Allan Poe's Interactive Horror is a surreal first-person point-and-click adventure that adapts Poe’s most macabre tales: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and Berenice. Unlike traditional adaptations, the game weaves these stories into an original framing narrative, allowing players to experience the tragedy through the fragmented minds of both the murderer and the victim.

The game is renowned for its distinctive “nightmare-fuel” visual style — a collage of claymation, stop-motion puppetry, and distorted video. This heavy atmosphere is cemented by the haunting vocal performance of Beat Generation icon William S. Burroughs and an eerie score by Thomas Dolby.

A Note on the Title Change

Regarding the decision to release the title as Edgar Allan Poe's Interactive Horror: 1995 Edition rather than its original moniker, Arjun Mehra, Publishing Manager at GMedia, issued the following statement:

"Bringing Inscape’s multimedia masterpiece back to modern screens has been a labor of love, but it also came with unique challenges. The decision to retire the original title, The Dark Eye, was made after careful consideration of the current global trademark landscape.

Due to overlapping trademark registrations with other long-standing franchises in the market, we needed a fresh identity to ensure a smooth global distribution. We chose a title that places the legendary author front and center. Edgar Allan Poe's Interactive Horror immediately conveys the game’s literary roots to a new generation of players, while the '1995 Edition' subtitle serves as a promise to our veteran fans: the name may be new, but the nightmare remains exactly as you remember it — unaltered, uncensored, and authentically 1995."
