FAQs:
Q: Wait, wasn't the Declaration of Independence signed July 4, 1776? Why is this festival running July 10th - July 17th?
A: On July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence contained only a single signature - that of John Hancock, the head of the Second Continental Congress. It took until August 2nd, 1776 for most of the 56 signees to put their signature on the document. So anytime between July 4th and August 2nd is really a good time to celebrate the Declaration of Independence!
In addition, the 2026 Steam Summer Sale ran through July 9th, so July 10th was selected as the start of the Let Freedom Ring Jubilee so as not to overlap with the Steam seasonal sale.
Q: Why is Benjamin Franklin the festival mascot? Why not Thomas Jefferson (author of the Declaration of Independence)?
A: Yes, Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, but the Second Continental Congress actually appointed a five-member committee to create the Declaration of Independence.
This committee consisted of Jefferson (Virginia), Franklin (Pennsylvania), John Adams (Massachusetts), Robert Livingston (New York), and Roger Sherman (Connecticut). Jefferson wrote the document, and Franklin did some editing before it was brought before Congress.
Although Jefferson is the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Franklin is chosen as the festival's mascot to acknowledge the contributions made by all of the Founding Fathers. Franklin was the oldest member at the Second Continental Congress.
Q: If this is a festival about the Declaration of Independence, why are there games about world history and not just American history?
A: While the Declaration of Independence was written for the American Revolution, the ideas espoused in the document go back much further, to Ancient Greece (the birthplace of democracy), the Magna Carta (asserting the rights of individuals), and the writings of those such as John Locke (who wrote of “life, liberty, and property”).
In addition, the American Revolution could not have succeeded without contributions from non-Americans like Thomas Paine (born in England), the Marquis de Lafayette (France), Rochambeau (France), Baron von Steuben (present-day Germany), and Tadeusz Kosciuszko (Poland), to name a few. The last four on that list all have statues directly across the street from the White House in Lafayette Park in honor of their contributions to the United States during the American Revolution.
Lastly, the Declaration of Independence has served as a spark for revolution in countries all around the world ever since it was written in 1776. For all these reasons, the festival is not limited just to video games about American history.
