April 20, 2021 – After raising 206% of its funding goal on Kickstarter, Monsters in the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense by David L. Craddock is funding on Indiegogo. The campaign can be found here: https://igg.me/at/xcombook.
The book's Indiegogo continues the effort Craddock began on Kickstarter by carrying over all funds raised and all stretch goals met, and offers gamers who missed out on the first campaign another opportunity to pre-order Monsters in the Dark. "We reached three stretch goals before the Kickstarter ended," said Craddock, "so we're hoping Indiegogo's users can help us keep building momentum to unlock the rest, including upgrading the special edition paperback to a beautiful hardcover."
Monsters in the Dark charts the early career of legendary strategy game designer Julian Gollop and culminates in the creation of 1994's UFO: Enemy Unknown, also known as X-COM: UFO Defense. Additionally, Craddock's book delves into the circumstances surrounding X-COM's cancellation—and publisher MicroProse UK's secret effort to save the project without alerting the executives who ordered them to abandon it.
Monsters in the Dark has garnered advance praise from game development luminaries. "Craddock is able to tease out not only the story of a favorite game, but, more poignantly to me at least, the story of the beginning of the industry we all love, that we have given our lives to, and that has changed entertainment forever," said Seamus Blackley, father of Microsoft's Xbox console.
"A must-read for any developer past or present," agreed John Johnson, producer and creative director of 2006's classic strategy title Company of Heroes.
X-COM: UFO Defense remains one of the highest-rated computer games in history. IGN named it the best PC game of all time in 2000 and 2007, and publications from Computer Gaming World to GameSpot awarded it high placement on best-game lists. In 2012, publisher 2K Games and developer Firaxis Games released XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a reimagining of Julian Gollop's venerable title for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms.
Based on interviews with its creators, Monsters in the Dark: The Making of X-COM: UFO Defense is funding now on Indiegogo and will be available later in 2021.
