The overview covers the following major mechanics (video's script):
Before we start the lesson... Learning is completely optional in Shujinkou. You can disable or ignore all the features in this trailer. Shujinkou is a huge JRPG, with learning functionalities included as an added bonus!
When you first start Shujinkou, you will be asked a series of quick questions to determine your playstyle. Options like Language Display, Difficulty, Learner or Gamer Emphasis will be selected. This can be changed at any time afterwards.
Regardless of your playstyle, you will ALWAYS be able to activate English-Only mode by pressing L3, which disables learning features. Various UI can be displayed in English, Japanese, Furigana, and Romaji.
Kanban
Over 400 entries and dozens of Kanban (Signboards) are scattered in Shujinkou's 16 labyrinths. Kanban cover Japanese hiragana, katakana, kanji, grammar, words, vocabulary, sentences, world & Akuma lore, proverbs, and more! All Kanban include voal lines spoken by native Japanese speakers. Listen to over 1,400 voice lines emphasizing word and sentence pronunciation! Check the Kanban Menu to quickly review discovered Kanban.
Moji Kiroku
Collecting Kanakae Orbs provides extra benefits outside of combat. Practice writing the characters imbued on the orbs you collect! Change between the List View and Individual View to quickly navigate through hundreds of orbs, and revel in the character you wrote!
To re-emphasize: This is a completely optional feature. This feature does not compromise the classic dungeon-crawling experience.
Jin's Nen'oshi
If LEARNING is enabled, Jin will remind you to practice writing some Japanese on a daily basis (in-game). Finishing at 80% or higher accuracy will result in a small gift of Gin (money). If the reminder becomes a nuisance, you can always snooze Jin!
Blue Texts, Explanations, and More!
Learn thousands of Japanese words, grammar, and phrases from 1,500,000+ words of dialogue, descriptions, and interactions in Shujinkou. Explanations appear in dialogue and can also be checked in the Party Menu. This provides a deeper look into certain Japanese words and concepts.
Various minigames, such as Fishing (Tsuri), also require memorization of certain fish names. Talk to Tsunako to learn more about it! Explore the Item Compendium and many other menus to learn and review the Japanese, English, Furigana, and Romaji for 1000s of items, enemies, and more.
