Horror Co-op "Spectral Scream" Tops Popular Upcoming VR Chart on Steam

May 7th, Seoul - Korean VR game developer STOIC Entertainment’s upcoming title has reached the #1 spot in Steam’s Popular Upcoming rankings, proving the recent popularity of the Horror Co-op genre in general. This is especially eye-catching, as Spectral Scream has usurped the top spot from expected mega-hit titles like EA’s F1@24.

The Horror Survival Co-op genre, or the Horror Party genre as it is called in some circles, includes recent VR hits such as Phasmophobia and Lethal Company, which rely heavily on multiplayer games where players must co-operate (and/or betray each other) to solve and survive horrific challenges. The comparatively brief gameplay time and replayability of contents seem to be some of the allure of these types of games, especially for VR.
Spectral Scream adds to this formula of success by implementing immersive, themed stages filled with highly interactive objects and colorful NPCs, as well as varying types of ‘monsters’ to defeat and exorcise such as demons, the undead and ghosts. The inclusion of unique monster types requires the players to come up with different methods of victory for each stage.
“We are extremely excited and honored by the fact that our game has garnered so much attention, even beating top-tier titles”, said Hong-seok Kim, CEO if STOIC Entertainment. “We believe this is a sign that players lean more towards gameplay and exciting contents when choosing which games to play, rather than brand values.”
STOIC Entertainment was the first Korean VR developer to launch successfully on Meta Quest Store back in December of 2022, and is preparing to launch another title, Tank Arena: Ultimate League, on May 23rd this year for the Meta Quest Store.
