Spick and span
Rarely will new standalone releases be as well-polished and beautiful as Genotype. Developed for Quest 2, the device is being pushed to its absolute limits by the Bolverk Studio dev-team. This includes CTO Lasse Tassing, Unity-wizard, and C-sharp expert, who have added several customizations to the Unity game engine to push the Quest 2 headset to its absolute limits. The game is also playable on Quest 3.

“For Genotype, that meant implementing a lot of custom solutions on top of Unity, including a culling system, multithreaded AI systems, and a completely custom lighting/shading system. This allowed us to make detailed environments that use baked, static lighting, but still make the surfaces “pop” by implementing a custom specular reconstruction algorithm,” says Lasse Tassing in clear and concise language that anyone can understand.

In simpler terms, Genotype is so squeaky clean and polished you’d go deaf if you rubbed your finger on it.

“I am more and more impressed the more I play. It looks stunning,” says Gibbysguide, who had early review access to Genotype.

FPS adventure
Genotype binds its roots to the always popular FPS single-player genre, though it also, to an extent, draws on the world of puzzles. The player must swim, shoot, and think while upgrading and leveling weapons and abilities. Exploring a vast research facility in Antarctica, overrun by monsters and beasts, takes the protagonist's personal story arc from dependence to self-reliance.

Monsters and beasts of all sizes have spawned from alien DNA.

Experienced writer
It’s a case of science run-amok that led to the demise of Snowdrop Initiative’s research facility in Antarctica. The player, personified as weather station intern Evely, is suddenly trapped within the maze-like construction. Immediately poisoned by airborne spores Evely must find a cure and destroy the evolving threat to the planet. The story is written by accomplished writer Morten Bruunbjerg (Hi-Fi Rush), who’s written and rewritten the story multiple times.

Early days
The game has been underway for two years, developed by a team of 8 (+interns), ranging from art over sound to programmers. Genotype is the studio's fifth published VR game since 2015. Bolverk Games have been part of the VR evolution since the early days.

"We are supremely excited to have come this far. Genotype is our biggest project yet, and I think it shows in its quality and feel. We're all beginning to feel the tingling of excitement," says CEO Bo Bennekov, who’s currently busy arranging a proper launch party.
