The free demo of Dread Neighbor, a brand-new 3D first-person psychological horror game developed by the Chinese indie studio ghostcase, is now available on Steam.
With core concept design by renowned Chinese horror creator Dajisi, Dread Neighbor continues the team’s exploration of psychological pressure and immersive storytelling. Centered around the theme of “malice born from being watched,” the game invites players to step into a seemingly ordinary daily life that slowly begins to unravel.
Ghostcase’s previous title, Dread Flats, was praised by multiple content creators as “the scariest game of 2025.” In Dread Neighbor, the studio preserves its signature first-person immersion while further refining visual fidelity, narrative pacing, and cinematic presentation—aiming to deliver a more subtle, grounded, and realistic psychological experience.

In Dread Neighbor, players take on the role of a young woman living alone and working in the city. To save money, she moves into an old apartment building—cheap, secluded, and unnervingly quiet.
At first, life follows a familiar routine: taking out the trash, feeding the cat, commuting to work, going to sleep. But subtle abnormalities soon emerge. Gaps in the wardrobe, shadows beneath the bed, holes in the walls—each seems to conceal an unseen presence. It never reveals itself outright, yet it never leaves, slowly eroding any sense of safety.
Presented entirely in first-person, the demo introduces players to this gradual shift from the mundane to the unsettling, allowing tension to accumulate quietly and persistently.
Refined Presentation, Deeper Immersion
Compared to Dread Flats, Dread Neighbor represents a noticeable step forward across multiple aspects. The game features more detailed 3D visuals, using lighting, spatial design, and environmental detail to create a convincingly realistic living space.
The core concept is shaped with the involvement of the renowned Chinese horror creator Dajisi, delivering an authentic modern Chinese psychological horror atmosphere. Whether exploring unfamiliar rooms or experiencing the world from a voyeuristic perspective, players are enveloped in an oppressive environment that feels increasingly inescapable.
The game employs a progressive loop structure: similar scenes repeat, but with subtle changes each time. Leaking fluids, watching eyes hidden in walls, unexplained traces—all accumulate based on the player’s actions, gradually pushing emotions toward imbalance. Rather than relying on sudden extremes, Dread Neighbor forces players to realize, loop by loop, that the space they inhabit is no longer safe.
Dread Neighbor is less about a single shocking event and more about the anxiety embedded within everyday life. A neighbor’s disappearance, unexplained changes inside the apartment, traces suggesting violence—each clue is scattered throughout an otherwise ordinary environment, waiting to be pieced together.
In the demo, players will begin to uncover the core mystery, experiencing how psychological pressure intensifies through exploration, and gradually realizing that what lies ahead may be a truth deliberately buried.
Ghostcase is an independent Chinese game studio focused on first-person psychological horror experiences. Their previous title, Dread Flats, received widespread acclaim from horror fans worldwide for its immersive storytelling and atmosphere.
Dread Neighbor builds upon that foundation, representing the studio’s next step—one that draws even closer to real-life settings and emotional experiences.
The free demo of Dread Neighbor is now available on Steam. Players interested in psychological horror are welcome to try the demo, add the game to their wishlist, and follow future updates.
